Plenty of good Loop candidates carry 400 and more horsepower, and plenty of shoppers walk past them over one sentence: "diesels like to be loaded." Here is what the people who actually rebuild these engines say about that.
The published experience of the trade and of owners with thousands of hours says big turbo diesels run happily at trawler speeds — with temperature discipline and an occasional run-up. Tony Athens of Seaboard Marine, who has spent decades repowering and rebuilding marine diesels, writes that the engine worn out early by gentle use is the one he is still waiting to meet, while hard-run engines wear out early all the time. Ruling a boat off your shortlist over its horsepower alone throws away candidates the evidence does not condemn.
"Diesels like to be loaded" is real advice with a real history — some older engine families do carbon up when they idle along for years. But somewhere along the way it hardened into "a big engine at low load destroys itself," and that version steers shoppers away from half the used market. A Loop boat spends most of its life at hull speed, asking 30 to 80 horsepower of engines rated for several hundred, so the question matters: is that ratio a problem?
Seaboard Marine's published articles on low-speed running report the pattern from commercial fleets: the longest-lived engines are the ones in trawler-type service run at half their rated power or less, with engines in that duty reaching five-figure hour counts, while the same engine families run near their governors in crew-boat service get torn down yearly. On a public Trawler Forum thread on exactly this question, owners report thousands of hours each on 300-plus-horsepower turbo diesels cruised at 1200 to 1300 rpm — one American Tug owner notes about 2,500 hours on a 380 hp Cummins at roughly 50 to 60 horsepower of output with no problems, and none reported across a fleet of some 300 sister boats. Those are their accounts, not our measurements — but they are public, independent, and consistent.
It is engine-dependent. Owners and mechanics in that same thread single out older families — Cat 3208s, two-stroke Detroits — as wanting more frequent hard runs to keep carbon at bay, while modern common-rail engines tolerate light load best. Temperature is the real discipline. The recurring counsel is to get the engine fully up to operating temperature on most runs and watch for wet stacking; a cold-run diesel is the actual villain in most light-load horror stories. The run-up habit is cheap insurance. A few minutes near maximum continuous power every ten or twenty hours cleans things up, and a periodic full-throttle check also verifies the propping and surfaces developing problems while they are small.
Hours mean little on their own — and the trade measures engine life closer to fuel burned than hours run. A useful rule of thumb from the same public discussion: a marine diesel produces roughly 20 horsepower for each gallon per hour it burns. So one question to the seller — "what did she burn per hour, and at about what rpm?" — converts an opaque hour meter into how those hours were actually spent. Six thousand hours at 2 gallons an hour is a different engine from six thousand at 12, and the seller's answer costs you nothing.
Don't strike a boat for horsepower alone. Ask instead: which engine family exactly, what did she burn at cruise, does the survey include an engine survey, and has she been run up and brought to temperature or idled cold. The engine's identity and its history decide — an oil analysis and a proper engine survey answer more than the rating plate ever will.
