Carver 356 Aft Cabin
What the published record establishes about this model, what owners report,
and the questions worth asking while a boat is still a listing. This page is about the
MODEL — a specific hull always gets its own homework.
A spacious, shallow-draft aft-cabin cruiser whose Loop fitness lives or dies by engine choice — common gassers are thirsty, the rare Cummins diesel is the sensible pick.
The Carver 356 Aft Cabin is a roomy, shallow-draft planing motoryacht that owners praise for its interior layout and space efficiency in a 35-foot boat. Its Great Loop suitability hinges almost entirely on engine choice: most were built with gasoline engines (widely cited as the main drawback for long-distance cruising), while a less common Cummins 6BTA diesel option makes a more sensible Looper. Air draft (~17'6" published) and draft (~3'3") are comfortably within Loop limits, and at least one owner has run the Erie Canal in one by hinging the radar and removing the anchor light.

Air draft
CLAIM
Published bridge clearance is roughly 17'6"
Brokerage listings give a bridge clearance around 17 ft 6 in, which sits comfortably under the Loop's controlling fixed-bridge height. The highest points are typically the radar dome and antennas, which are what determine real air draft.

CONTEXT
Radar and anchor light can be lowered to clear canals
A 1999 356 owner completed the full Erie Canal by putting the radar dome on a hinge and removing the anchor light (three screws), laying both on the hardtop. This shows the boat's height is manageable for the Loop's low-bridge sections with minor, reversible modifications. Used boats are often modified, so two 356s may not have the same air draft.

Your move: Measure the actual air draft to the highest fixed point on your specific boat and identify exactly what folds or removes (radar, antennas, anchor light) and how much height that saves.
Draft
CLAIM
Shallow draft around 3'3" — well within Loop limits
Brokerage specs list a maximum draft near 3 ft 3 in (Carver's own test sheet listed 39"), giving the boat easy access to the shallow stretches and anchorages of the Loop.

CONTEXT
Running gear is exposed with little protective keel
Owners note the twin-engine running gear (props, shafts, rudders) is relatively exposed and the hull is fairly flat with little meaningful keel — one wished for a deeper keel for cruising unfamiliar waters. This raises the stakes of a grounding or debris strike in shallow, unfamiliar Loop waters.

Your move: Inspect props, shafts, struts and rudders at haulout for prior grounding damage, and run conservatively in skinny or unmarked water.
Fuel and range
CLAIM
Total fuel around 318 gallons, including an aft auxiliary tank
Brokerage specs list total fuel around 318 gallons; this figure includes an aft auxiliary tank in addition to the saddle tanks. One owner's strategy is to run the aft tank out to a destination and the saddle tanks home.

CONTEXT
Slowing down dramatically cuts a gasser's burn
Factory test data for an 8.1L boat shows roughly 10.6 gph at ~10 mph (2000 rpm) rising to ~25 gph at 22 mph and ~47 gph at ~30 mph; the 7.4 MPI is listed cruising ~22 mph at 25 gph. Comparable Carver 36 gassers report ~5–6 gph at ~8–9 mph hull speed. Running at Loop trawler speeds slashes fuel burn versus planing, but a light gas hull dragged down to hull speed is inefficient and wet-riding compared with a true trawler.

Your move: Decide your intended cruise speed and compute realistic range from the specific boat's usable fuel at that burn, remembering to hold a reserve.
Reading the boat
CONTEXT
Well-regarded layout and space for a 35-footer
Owners consistently praise the 356's interior volume and layout, calling it a favorite aft-cabin design with well-thought-out space — a genuine strength for extended liveaboard-style Loop cruising.
