The cheapest boat you find can turn out to be the most expensive one you buy, and the reason has nothing to do with the boat.
Some dams have locks. Most don't.
A lake sitting above a lockless dam is usually a closed system — however large it is, however obviously it connects to a river on a map, however many boats are on it. Nothing floats out.
⭐ This is the same shape as air draft: a structure that either passes you or doesn't, that nobody mentions in a listing, and that costs five figures to discover late.
On the Tennessee River, the navigable system is nine dams and nine locks — a channel roughly 650 miles long, from Knoxville down to the Ohio. TVA publishes the rule, which means you don't have to look up your lake one at a time.
Fort Loudoun, Watts Bar, Chickamauga, Nickajack, Guntersville, Wheeler, Wilson, Pickwick Landing and Kentucky. That's the list, and every one of them is on the Loop route. A boat lying at any of them can get there on her own bottom.
🔴 The big tributary lakes are not on it. Norris, Douglas, Cherokee and Fontana all sit on tributaries — and of all TVA's tributary dams, only Melton Hill has a navigation lock. Beautiful water, full of bargains, and most of those boats leave on a truck.
Chickamauga, Wheeler, Wilson, Pickwick and Kentucky lock around the clock. Fort Loudoun, Watts Bar, Nickajack and Guntersville run twenty hours — 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., per TVA.
Which matters the moment the delivery stops being hypothetical. Arriving at a closed lock at two in the morning is a night on a wall, not a delay you planned for. It is in no listing anywhere.
Tellico Dam has no lock either. By the strict rule, Tellico should be closed water.
It isn't. A short canal links Tellico to Fort Loudoun, and TVA's own page on the reservoir says the canal "allows barges to enter the Little Tennessee River without a lock." Boats go out through the canal and down the Fort Loudoun lock.
⚠️ Which is the correction that makes this page worth reading rather than just repeating: the question is not "does that dam have a lock." It's "is there any way out." Usually the answer is a lock. Occasionally it's a canal. On most lakes it's neither.
The Corps of Engineers' navigation channel on the Chattahoochee runs up from the Apalachicola to Columbus, Georgia, through three locks and dams — Jim Woodruff, George W. Andrews and Walter F. George. Columbus is the top of it.
Lake Lanier sits roughly a hundred miles above Columbus. There was a post-war plan to carry navigation on up to Atlanta; it was never built. The lake is enormous, it's an hour from a major city, and it is full of boats that cannot leave it on their own bottom.
🔴 A buyer comparing two listings ninety minutes apart by road may be comparing a free delivery with a five-figure one, and nothing on either page says so.
You'll see ranges quoted for this. We're not going to repeat them, because we couldn't trace a single one of them to a source we'd be willing to name, and this is the wrong number to be approximately right about.
What we can tell you is what's on the invoice, so you know what to ask three haulers to quote:
⚠️ Ask each hauler which of those they're including. The gap between a cheap quote and an expensive one is usually two of these lines, not the rate.
Different question, and it's the one only you can answer. Both ends have to sit on the same connected system — so it isn't enough that the boat is on Loop water, if you aren't.
⚠️ The case that catches people: a landlocked home port needs a truck no matter how good the boat's location is. If you keep your boat above a lockless dam, every boat you shop is a truck ride, and none of the listings will mention it.
Our worked examples are the Tennessee and the Chattahoochee, because that's where we could source the answers. The method generalizes even though our examples don't — and it's two questions, both answered by publishers rather than by forums.
⭐ Ask it at that level and it's one lookup, not forty. "Does this particular dam have a lock" is the hard version of the question; "is this water above the head of navigation" is the published one.
⚠️ And check for the Tellico case — a canal, a cut, a connecting waterway. A lockless dam is a wall only if there's no other way out.
If the boat can reach you on her own bottom, the delivery trip is worth more than a sea trial.
A sea trial is an hour, on a day the seller picked. A delivery is days of running: locks, fuel stops, a night at anchor, weather you didn't choose. Every weak system gets found on your schedule, close to your own mechanic, before you've built a season around the boat.
People treat the delivery as a cost. On connected water it's the most thorough trial you'll ever get, and you were going to make the trip anyway.
⚠️ "Connected" is not "should make the trip." A boat that has sat for six years is connected to the Loop and still shouldn't go anywhere under her own power. This is a geography question, not a condition question.
🔴 And the delivery route has its own gates. Fixed bridges, lock chamber dimensions, controlling depths. A boat can be perfectly connected and still not fit the way home — which is the air-draft question again, applied to a trip most buyers never think of as a trip.
The operating authorities' own published navigation material: TVA on the nine-lock Tennessee River system, on which tributary dams have locks, on lock operating hours and on the Tellico canal; and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Apalachicola–Chattahoochee–Flint channel and its three locks. We haven't trucked a boat, and we haven't run every one of these routes. The lakes named here are examples, not a complete list — check your specific lake with the authority that operates the dam, and if one of these is wrong, tell us.
