Single or twin engines?

We're not going to answer that. Owners who've done the Loop are split roughly down the middle, and anyone who tells you it's settled is telling you their preference.

What we can do is separate the parts that are agreed from the part that isn't.

What owners actually agree on

These aren't contested. The tradeoffs are consensus โ€” only the choice between them is personal.

RedundancyTwin, hands down. Engine-out get-home capability is the twin's clearest advantage and nobody argues it
Engine-room accessSingle. One engine to maintain and stock spares for, and easy access around it. Twins in smaller boats are often tight crawl spaces
ManeuverabilityClose. A single with a bow thruster is plenty for most situations; the twin's edge shows in aggressive maneuvering, high wind or strong current
Running-gear protectionOften the single. Many singles have a full skeg protecting shaft and prop; many twins run exposed props โ€” and the Loop has a lot of shallow, debris-carrying water
CostMinimal difference. More parts on a twin, but the same parts twice, and it's small against what marinas cost

๐Ÿ”ด Two of those come with a check you can only do in person.

On any twin, physically crawl around both engines before you buy. One owner's advice was exactly that: if you're looking at twins, try to get all the way round both of them. A photograph of an engine room tells you nothing about whether you can reach the back of the outboard side.

And look at prop and shaft exposure. A protected running gear is a different boat in shallow water from an exposed one, and no listing distinguishes them.

๐Ÿ”ด The efficiency argument is not reliable, and most people think it is

"Singles are more economical" is the most common reason given for choosing one. It doesn't hold up.

An experienced owner running both reports his twin-engine 430 gets almost the same mileage as his 40-foot single at the same speed โ€” and that the 40-foot single, at 370 hp, is the same or less efficient than a 40-foot twin running 2 ร— 240 hp.

At equal speed it's roughly a wash. โš ๏ธ Which makes fuel a poor deciding factor, and it's the factor people decide on.

โญ Why a trawler single handles better than you'd expect

Mechanical rather than a matter of opinion.

A single spins better one way than the other. A 270ยฐ turn to the left can be easier than a 90ยฐ turn to the right when you're turning the boat in its own length.

It sounds absurd until you understand what's happening, and then it makes sense. You can also walk a single with a bow thruster sideways โ€” but only in one direction.

โญ And the debate is really three-way, not two

One owner reframes it usefully: the expensive explorer yachts run singles โ€” but they also carry powerful thrusters and a get-home engine. For most Loopers those boats are out of range. So twins are how you buy maneuverability affordably.

Which makes the real choice: a protected single ยท twins ยท or a properly-equipped single. Three options at three price points, not a binary.

โญ A third variable the argument usually hides: turbocharged or not

Every version of this debate is about engine count. Aspiration is a second axis, and it doesn't appear in a listing line that says "twin diesels."

But it isn't a blanket rule, and experienced owners disagree about how much it matters โ€” particularly on 1980s engines, where the view is that a turbo is not by itself a problem, and where plenty of non-turbo engines were still being fitted.

What's clearer is that it's engine-specific. The Caterpillar 3208's reputation is scoped to its rating: the trouble attaches to the turbocharged 435 hp version, not the naturally aspirated 210. Same block.

So the useful question isn't "turbo or not" โ€” it's "which engine, at which rating." That is a question you can actually answer about a specific boat, and the blanket version isn't.

Owners who have run the Loop, including Gold Loopers who did it single-screw, and a published boat-test comparison between a twin 430 and a 40-foot single. We haven't tested anything โ€” and where owners disagreed, which on this question is most of the time, we left the disagreement in rather than picking a side.
