Carver 444 Motor Yacht

What the published record establishes about this model, what owners report, and the questions worth asking while a boat is still a listing. This page is about the MODEL — a specific hull always gets its own homework.

A cockpit motor yacht with real Loop pedigree but a critical fiberglass-exhaust/muffler concern and an engine split that decides which problems apply.

The Carver 444 Motor Yacht (roughly 2001–2006) is a cockpit motor yacht derived from Carver's 396, offering a spacious two-cabin layout on a planing hull. Carver shifted from Cummins to mostly Volvo Penta diesels around 2003, so later hulls most likely carry Volvo TAMD63P/D6 engines — which matters because the most serious documented issues are Volvo-package-specific. Multiple 444s have completed the Great Loop, so it is a proven candidate, but the fiberglass-exhaust failure reports deserve close verification. The USCG muffler recall (070042T) covered model years 2000–2003: 2004-on hulls are outside it, and for one inside the range, ask the seller for documentation that the recall work was actually done. Nominal ~18 ft bridge clearance is within Loop tolerance but must be physically measured on the specific boat. Carver closed in 2021, so there is no factory parts or technical support — that falls to the aftermarket and the owner community. A real parts and resale consideration rather than a disqualifier.

How to read this: 🟢 Fact = confirmed against a document, spec sheet, or owner. Everything else — Claim, Pattern, Question, Context — is not yet verified: things to check, not settled truth. Sources are linked where published.

Builder status

CONTEXT
Carver Yachts permanently closed on 30 July 2021 — the builder no longer exists. Marquis closed with it; KCS International (Cruisers Yachts) bought the Pulaski, Wisconsin facility. There is no factory parts support, warranty, or technical backing — support shifts to the aftermarket and the owner community. Third-party systems (Volvo, Kohler) are unaffected. Model overview

CONTEXT
Cockpit motor yacht based on the 396 hull The 444 Motor Yacht is essentially Carver's 396 Motor Yacht with a cockpit added, built roughly 2001–2006. It offers a two-cabin planing-hull layout and has a documented Loop track record. src: Denison boat review; Carver Yacht Owners forum

Air draft

CLAIM
Nominal ~18 ft clearance, but radar/arch additions raise it Listings quote a bridge clearance around 18 ft, generally within Loop tolerance. Published spec figures are unreliable because prior owners add radar domes, antennas, and hardtop modifications. The buyer must physically measure actual air draft at half loads including everything on top and identify what can be lowered. src: Pomerleau Les Bateaux listing; Harbortowne Marine listing; Denison review; Trawler Forum
Your move: Measure actual air draft on the specific boat including radar/antennas and note what can be lowered or removed.
QUESTION
Is the aft-deck hardtop factory or aftermarket, and what is the air draft with everything lowered that can be lowered? A factory aft-deck hardtop is fixed structure — it does not fold, hinge, or lift off for a bridge. That makes it different in kind from the radar dome, antennas and arch fittings that also sit on top: those come down, and this does not. Two 444s quoting the same air draft in their listings can therefore be different boats at a fixed bridge, because one can reduce and the other cannot. Whatever a hardtop boat measures at is its number, permanently. src: Can I Loop? ledger — derived from our single-handing and air-draft claims
Your move: Establish whether the hardtop is factory or a later addition, then measure the air draft with everything lowered that can be lowered — that figure, not the listing's, is what has to clear.
CONTEXT
444s have completed the Great Loop Documented 444 Loopers include 'Happy Ours' (2001) and a 2003 hull that finished in early 2025, confirming the model is a viable Loop boat once air draft is verified. src: Trawler Forum, corroborated by a second owner discussion

Range & fuel

CONTEXT
Best economy near hull speed (~8 kn) Owners report hull speed around 8 knots (~1300 rpm on Volvo 63P). For maximum range keep at or below hull speed; running above hull speed but below a clean plane wastes fuel. Verify actual burn and usable tankage on the specific boat. src: Carver Yacht Owners forum
CONTEXT
Planing cruise burn is high A Cummins-powered boat test showed ~27+ mph best cruise at ~28.6 gph, roughly 300 miles on a fill. Volvo owners report ~17 kn fully loaded at 400 rpm off WOT, and ~20–21 mph at ~3150 rpm as a good speed/fuel compromise. Plan Loop legs around displacement-speed range, not planing figures. src: Denison / Carver boat review; Carver Yacht Owners forum

Reading the boat

CONTEXT
Confirm which engine package before applying forum lore Because Cummins and Volvo boats coexist in the run, scope every forum claim to the actual engines on the hull. Exhaust/muffler and Volvo parts concerns apply to Volvo boats; the boat-test fuel figures came from a Cummins boat. src: Carver Yacht Owners forum; Trawler Forum
