Navigator 4800 CLASSIC
What the published record establishes about this model, what owners report,
and the questions worth asking while a boat is still a listing. This page is about the
MODEL — a specific hull always gets its own homework.
A quiet-riding late-'90s motoryacht that has completed the Loop. Price Volvo parts and servicing along your route, and measure the flybridge/arch air draft.
The Navigator 4800 Classic is a flybridge motoryacht from Navigator Yachts (founded 1988 by the Marshall family of Californian yacht fame), generally praised by owners for a soft ride, useable power, and good fuel economy. Verifiable model-specific data is thinner than for mainstream trawlers, so several points below are framed as questions to confirm on the specific hull. As a Loop platform it has real-world precedent — at least two 4800 Classics have completed the Great Loop — but engine variant, fuel capacity, and air draft all vary by hull and must be verified. Twin Volvo Penta diesels are common in this family (Series 63 on late-1990s hulls), but treat the engine fit as hull-specific: before committing, find out exactly which engines this boat carries, who services them along your route, and what parts actually cost — a listing won't tell you, and all three vary more than the brand does.
How to read this: 🟢 Fact = confirmed against a document, spec sheet,

verified: things to check, not settled truth. Sources are linked where published.

QUESTION
Is Navigator still producing, and what factory support exists?
Navigator Yachts — which also built Californian — was sold to a private equity group at the end of 2012 and the founding Marshall family exited. It continued building 45–68' semi-custom yachts in Perris, California, but the entity now appears registered to an Oregon address associated with a hardware company. Current production status could not be established, so we don't assert one. For a used-boat buyer the practical question is parts and factory support, not whether new hulls are being laid.

Your move: Ask the broker, or a Navigator owners' group, what factory or aftermarket support currently exists.
Builder and support
CONTEXT
Sold to an unnamed private-equity group at the end of 2012; renamed Navigator Yachts and Products Inc. (reported Feb 2013).
CORPORATE STATUS IS GENUINELY UNCLEAR — do not assume active. The original Marshall-family company was sold to an unnamed private-equity group at end of 2012 (reported by Trade Only and The Log, Feb 2013); the Marshalls left and the entity became "Navigator Yachts and Products Inc." By 2013-2016, owners and a buyer phoning the factory reported it closed, production stopped, and the name sold, poss

Range & cruising
CONTEXT
About 7.5 gph at displacement/trawler cruise
A 4800 owner reported averaging roughly 7.5 gph cruising around 1,800 rpm with the generator running (including ~10% of hours at ~2,300 rpm to load the engines). That is the relevant burn figure for Loop-speed running; planing speed burns far more (roughly 1 mpg / ~20 gph at 20 kts on the same engine family).

QUESTION
What is this hull's actual fuel capacity — 500, 550, or optional 750 gal?
Listings show fuel capacity varying by hull: 1999 at 550 gal, 2003 at 500 gal, 2000 at 550 gal, with an optional 750-gal setup reported by one owner. Confirm the tankage on the specific boat since it drives range.

CONTEXT
Cruise and top-end speeds
Twin 370 hp Volvo diesels cruise around 15–16 kt; a documented sea trial ran from 6.6 kt at 1,000 rpm to about 21 kt wide open at 2,800 rpm. For the Loop you'll run displacement speeds, where the ~7.5 gph figure applies.

Air draft
PATTERN
Flybridge with radar arch — measure air draft and identify what lowers
This is a flybridge boat with a radar arch and antennas, so it tends to sit high; no published air-draft figure was found for the 4800 Classic. Owners note prior owners may have added a new radar antenna or gear that raises clearance, so always take your own measurement and identify what can be lowered (arch, antennas). At least two 4800 Classics have completed the Loop, so it can be brought under fixed bridges with prep — but confirm the measured number yourself.

Systems
QUESTION
Age and condition of the air-conditioning units — any replaced together?
A 4800 owner replaced all four AC units after they failed within 24 months of each other (suspected running in shallow sandy water), calling it his only large unexpected expense. Ask the age and service history of the AC compressors and pumps.

CONTEXT
Navigator built its own tanks — inspect aluminum fuel tanks for age
Navigator fabricated their own FRP water and waste tanks and their own aluminum fuel tanks; the 1999 listing confirms aluminum fuel tanks. That is generally viewed positively, but on a boat this age have the aluminum tanks inspected for pitting/corrosion.

Reading the boat
CONTEXT
Loop precedent exists, but verify each hull individually
Navigator Yachts descends from the Californian line (Marshall family, founded 1988) and the 4800 has happy owners who value its soft ride and economy. At least one 1999 is marketed as Great Loop capable and a 2001 completed the Loop in late 2024 — real precedent, but engine variant, tankage, and air draft still vary hull-to-hull and must be checked.
