Source: PowerBoat Guide (2016), Selene 36-38 Trawler. If a listing disagrees with these numbers, the listing may still be right. Settle the difference before it costs you.

A small full-displacement trawler with a teak interior, one Cummins and 500 gallons of fuel, asking around $350,000. Her mast folds for the Illinois bridge. The homework is her tanks and her engine.

The Selene 36, which brokers also call the 36 Archer, is a full-displacement trawler that the PowerBoat Guide dates from 2003 and says has been called the 38 since 2010. She is 41'9" overall with a 14'6" beam, a 4'8" draft, 500 gallons of fuel and a single Cummins diesel, cruising at 7 to 8 knots. The galley is up, the master has a separate head and shower, and a guest stateroom has its own head. Listings for 2004 to 2006 boats asked about $345,000 to $360,000 in 2025.

Where the listings disagree

Published numbers for this model don't agree. Settle these on the boat you're looking at before they cost you.

QUESTION
Draft is listed as 4'8" and 5 feet The PowerBoat Guide and a 2005 listing give 4'8", and the builder gives 4'8" for the 38. Another 2005 listing gives 5 feet. src: PowerBoat Guide (2016); Seattle Yachts and Denison listings (2005); Selene Yachts, 38 Voyager
Your move: Ask what she draws with full tanks.

Buying

CLAIM
Recent listings asked about $345,000 to $360,000 A 2004 boat in Palm Coast, Florida, dropped from $375,000 to $349,900 in February 2025 and is now off the market. A 2005 boat in Anacortes, Washington, asked $359,000, and another 2005 boat there asked $345,000 before it sold. A 2006 boat sold in 2018 after asking $339,000. We found no sold prices. src: United Yacht (2004); Denison Yacht Sales (2005, 2006); Seattle Yachts (2005), read Oct 2026
Your move: Ask the broker for recent sold prices, since asking prices are all we could find.

Cost to keep

CLAIM
Fiberglass decks with teak cap rails, and teak inside A 2005 listing describes molded non-skid fiberglass decks with teak cap rails, so there's no teak deck to recaulk. The PowerBoat Guide says the interior is solid teak joinery with a teak-and-holly sole. src: Seattle Yachts listing (2005); PowerBoat Guide (2016)
Your move: Look at the cap rail varnish and the sole, and ask when each was last done.
QUESTION
Are her fuel tanks the size the paperwork says? Listings describe fiberglass fuel tanks, 500 gallons in all, split into two 250-gallon tanks on at least one boat. In 2009 Soundings reported a Selene 43 owner suing the builder over tanks that held about 800 gallons against an advertised 1,050. That was a different model, and the magazine reported no outcome. src: Soundings, Peter Swanson (June 2009); Denison listing (2006); PowerBoat Guide (2016)
Your move: Ask whether anyone has measured her tanks by filling them from near empty, and check the fuel log against it.

Engine access

PATTERN
Two ways into the engine room, one through the master shower The PowerBoat Guide and two listings describe an engine room reached by a ladder through a hatch in the salon or through a door in the owner's shower. src: PowerBoat Guide (2016); Denison listing (2005); United Yacht listing (2004)
Your move: Try both ways in, and decide whether you can live with service traffic through your shower.

Livability

CLAIM
Galley up, master aft, guest cabin forward, two heads The PowerBoat Guide describes a galley-up layout with two staterooms and two heads, a salon with doors to the side decks on both sides, and a master with separate head and shower compartments. A Florida listing puts the master aft, with an aft-opening window, and a 2005 listing gives the master more than 6'8" of headroom. src: PowerBoat Guide (2016); United Yacht listing (2004); Seattle Yachts listing (2005)
Your move: If anyone aboard has bad knees, count the steps between the salon and each cabin.
CLAIM
Walkaround decks, side gates and steps to the flybridge The PowerBoat Guide notes full walkaround decks and sturdy handrails. A 2005 listing adds boarding gates on both sides, a transom gate, and molded fiberglass steps from the aft deck to the flybridge. src: PowerBoat Guide (2016); Seattle Yachts listing (2005)
Your move: If you're bringing a dog, try the flybridge steps and the boarding gate at your usual dock height.
CLAIM
Diesel heat on Northwest boats, air conditioning on the Florida boat The Pacific Northwest listings we read show Espar diesel heat, and the one Florida listing has a Cruisair air conditioning system. The Loop runs through Southern summers. src: Seattle Yachts (2005); Denison (2006); United Yacht (2004) listings
Your move: Check that she has air conditioning sized for a Southern summer, and that her shore power and generator can run it.

Fuel & range

CLAIM
A 1,000-mile range claim with no speed attached A 2005 listing claims a range "of over 1000 nautical miles on one tank of fuel with a 10% reserve," without saying at what speed. We found no measured fuel burn. Holding back 10% of 500 gallons, the 250 miles from Alton to Paducah needs only about 0.6 miles per gallon. src: Denison listing (2005); PowerBoat Guide (2016)
Your move: Ask for the fuel log, gallons and engine hours, from her last long run.

Air draft & routes

CLAIM
Her mast stands at 21'2" and folds down The PowerBoat Guide lists her mast clearance at 21'2", above the Loop's 19'6" limit on the Illinois River, and listings describe a hinged or folding mast. We found no published height with the mast down, and that number decides whether the western Erie Canal, at about 15 feet, is open to her. src: PowerBoat Guide (2016); Seattle Yachts (2005) and United Yacht (2004) listings
Your move: Have the owner lower the mast and measure to the highest fixed point, flybridge and radar included.

Model identity

QUESTION
Is the 38 the same boat? The PowerBoat Guide says the 36 has been called the 38 since 2010. A 2009 Boattest news item describes the 38 as part of a new generation of Selenes with a reworked hull and a "cruiser stern." Selene's current 38 Voyager is "based on the successful Archer design." src: PowerBoat Guide (2016); Boattest (Jul 2009); Selene Yachts, 38 Voyager page
Your move: If you're comparing a 36 with a 38, ask the seller which hull and engine she has.
